Summary of payment program
Billing
Alaska Patient Information Form:The patient will not be billed for the forensic portion of the examination.
The benefits of reporting to law enforcement may include:
- Law enforcement will have an opportunity to collect evidence, from the suspect, and from other possible crime scenes.
- Witnesses may be interviewed in a timely fashion.
- The patient may be eligible for Violent Crimes Compensation funds to pay for counseling and other services.
The consequences of delayed reporting to law enforcement may include:
- Evidence that would normally be collected by law enforcement will be permanently lost.
- Suspects and witnesses will not be interviewed and they may not be available or cooperative later.
- Alaska law provides that an application for Violent Crimes Compensation may not be considered unless the crime is reported to police.
Payment
A victim of sexual assault who is over the age of 16 years may not be required to pay, directly or
indirectly, for the costs of the forensic portion of the examination. The forensic portion includes all steps necessary to collect evidence for a
forensic examination kit or necessary to determine whether a sexual assault has occurred. Any treatment beyond the forensic examination, such as emergency room care, laboratory, testing, medications, etc., is at their own expense.
